I actually don’t mind that people in poorer countries raise guinea pigs as food. I’ve seen articles about really poor families without men to make money where the mother began a guinea pig farm to support the family, and since they breed quickly and don’t take up too much space, it’s a really good opportunity for them to provide for their families.
I’ve actually watched some videos of guinea pig farms in Peru and Africa and most of them look very nice! They have plenty of food and water and the cages aren’t left filthy. I mean it’s not the ideal environment but they look healthy (and I dare say it looks even better than a lonely pig in a little cage that’s ignored by the kids whose parents thought it would be a good pet for them). People don’t want to eat sick pigs, after all.
I hope I don’t upset anyone showing pictures of the farms, but I feel like it’s a pretty important thing to note.
Regardless, I still think it’s pretty shitty that people take pictures of dead or roasted pigs and tag them in the guinea pig tag. It’s one thing to support the farming; it’s another thing to take a picture of a dead animal and put it where you know owners will see. I don’t know, it just really rubs me the wrong way. (Same goes for feeding them to snakes, but that’s another rant in itself I think.)
So, yeah! It actually makes me kind of happy to see that the pigs are well taken care of before they’re used for food, and I think it’s awesome that they are able to support poor families in less developed countries. I guess in an ideal world, humans wouldn’t need to raise and kill animals for food and all animals had caring homes, but for now, I am okay with how it has panned out. Go piggies~!
